Costa Rica's Wildlife & Nature

One of the main attractions to Costa Rica is the varied wildlife on display throughout the country. In a country roughly the size of West Virginia, with about 0.03% of the world's land mass, Costa Rica is home to about 6% of the world's biodiversity. This biodiversity can be attributed to Costa Rica's location as a bridge between North & South America. There are more bird species found in Costa Rica than can be found in the whole of North America- which includes 600 resident birds and more than 200 migratory birds.
In addition, there are 7 active volcanoes. The 2 that are the most visited are Arenal which is among the 10 most active volcanoes worldwide and Poas which is the 2nd widest volcano in the world. More than 25% of Costa Rica's land is either national park, nature refuge or nature reserve.
